On December 9, the Padstapper (Walking Club) organizes the Waffle Tour. Head down to ‘De Spiraal’ in the city center of Geraardsbergen and walk through the winter landscape around the city. The course is built around three loops, all three leaving from the starting place ‘De Spiraal’. There is a loop of 6.9 km, a loop of 8.5 km and one of 5.7 km. A free freshly baked waffle is offered.

The Padstappers organize the Sinterklaas tour (Saint Nicholas tour) on November 22. It is a unique walk through the hiking trails in and around Geraardsbergen and the Flemish Ardennes. It starts between 8 am and 3 pm. There is a choice between walks of  4, 7, 10, 12, 16, 22, 26 and 32 km. Departure in the provincial domain De Gavers, meeting point ‘De Doos’, Onkerzelestraat 280 in Onkerzele- Geraardsbergen, at 4 km from our holiday home. Saint Nicholas is awaiting you there with his black helpers. They hand out goodies and there is a gift for the children. Drinks and food are available. Appointment in ‘De Doos’.

On October 24th, the Padstappers (Walking Club) organizes the Winter Hour Walk. A unique walk through the Flemish Ardennes. You can start between 7h30 am and 3 pm. You can choose between walks of 4, 7, 10, 14, 18, 22 km. Starting point is at the Gemeentelijke Basisschool, Edingseweg 344 in Denderwindeke near Ninove, about 15 minutes by car from our holiday home.

The Padstappers (a Walking Club) organizes the Nature Reserve Tour on September 27th. It is a unique walk through the beautiful nature around Geraardsbergen. It starts between 7 am and 3 pm. There is a choice between walks of 7, 10, 14, 18, 22, 26 and 32 km. Starting point is the provincial domain the Gavers, meeting point at ‘De Doos’, Onkerzelestraat 280 in Onkerzele- Geraardsbergen, 4 km from our holiday home.

Every first Sunday after August 24th, a procession takes place in Geraardsbergen. August 24 is the feast day of Apostle Bartholomeüs. During this event, the relics of the apostle are carried around the city streets. This ‘fun’ walk is a unique spectacle with compelling music and it provides a lot of ambiance with folk songs, marches, waltzes and fairground songs. There is the legendary after party ‘Saint Saucisse’ at café ‘The Preacher’ during which the oldest bearer of the shrine of Saint-Bartholomeüs is carried on a wearer while he throws pieces of salami into the grabbing and drinking crowd. The peeled saugases refer to the torture death of the apostle, who was skinned alive. An unmissable spectacle.

This year the Binckbank Tour in Friesland will start on 31 August. This cycling race runs from the north of the Netherlands to Flanders and the arrival is planned on the Wall, 50 meters from the holiday home. As soon as we have more information about the race route and the timelines, we will inform you via this website.

On Saturday August 1st, the Padstappers organise the St Adrians summer walking tour. Participants can start from 6 am till 3 pm.

There is a choice between the following distances : 7, 10, 14, 18, 22, 26, 32 en 50 km.

Starting point is the Vrije Basisschool, Zikastraat 55 in Moerbeke.

The Gavers (provincial domain) walk takes place on the Pentecost Monday and is part of the Prior Trophy. Every one can participate, starting between 7:30 am and 3 pm. Departure is at the provincial domain The Gavers, location is ‘De Doos’, Onkerzelestraat 280 in Onkerzele- Geraardsbergen at 4 km from our holiday home. Make your choice : 7, 10, 14, 18, 22, 26, 32 or 50 km.

On Sunday April 19 you can participate on the walking tour of the Padstappers, a club of people who organize beautiful walks in the region. Departure at the Koninklijk Atheneum, Papiermolenstraat 103 in Geraardsbergen. It is possible to make a trip of 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 22, 32 or 42 km.

At 3 pm on the last Sunday of February, a historic procession of more than 1000 participants walks through the city. At the end of the procession, the druids, the youngsters who carry the Krakelingen ( a kind of pretzel cookie) and thousands of spectators travel to the Wall and the Chapel Wall up to the top of the Oudenberg. 5.000 Krakelingen are being thrown to the crowd. The person who catches the golden Krakeling, gets a golden jewel in the shape of the cookie. At 8 pm a huge straw doll is lit on the top of the Oudenberg to chase away the winter. The surrounding villages can see the fire and answer it by setting their straw dolls in fire as well. On the Oudenberg, burning torches are handed out to the public, which descends via the Wall to the marketplace, where the torches are extinguished. The party continues at the lively cafés.

This event takes place on the first Monday of March. It is part of the end of winter fairground activity. More than 165 market vendors and stand workers ensure an incredible ambiance in the city. Numerous stalls with food, drinks and so much more attract the tourists and the locals. Entrance is free. All streets of the city center, the marketplace and the station square attract masses of people. Our holiday home is at walking distance.
